Last year, the San Luis Obispo High School Stunt team won first place in the CIF Championships. This year, the Stunt athletes are determined to uphold their legacy.
“We have a lot of work to do if we want to win CIF’s again, but I think we’re capable of winning if we lock in and focus,” said senior Hanie Hernandez.
The Stunt team won their first game against Morro Bay High School with a score of 22 to 2. They showcased their hard work at a tournament at Westlake High School, where they made it to the final round of the Battle Back Bracket, unfortunately losing to Atascadero High School.
With the second game of the year approaching, against Atascadero and Paso. Stunt is working hard to perfect their routines and establish a strong team.
“This season is pretty promising but we have a lot to improve. I think it’s important to have a year where you need to grow and learn new things,” said senior Isabella Ketchum.
Stunt is one of the fastest emerging women’s sports in the US. Many high schools and colleges are adopting the sport. Many people are not informed about the logistics of Stunt, they’re many misconceptions about it.
“A lot of people think that Stunt is easy and it’s the same as sideline cheerleading,” said sophomore Jazmine Paton.
Stunt is a sport that removes the crowd-leading aspect of cheerleading and focuses on athletic skills, which include partner stunts, pyramids and tosses, and jumps and tumbling. The teams compete head to head and get judged on which team executed the individual routines better.
The season for SLOHS Stunt is off to a great start! Stunt has a scrimmage against Liberty Ranch at Taylor gym on Monday, March 30 at four p.m., so come and support our Tiger athletes!
