While many San Luis Obispo High School students are counting down the days to freedom, many others are headed straight back to the classroom. As more and more SLOHS students are attending some sort of summer school, many are wondering if giving up your break is really worth it?
Summer school offers students a chance to catch up, get ahead, and strengthen their skills in a fast timeline. Although it feels like giving up a break, it can help students’ schedules become easier and more manageable during the school year and provide more opportunities to take other cool classes.
“Yeah, because it gets you ahead in school, and you don’t take a break from learning so you don’t forget things. It’s helped me so I don’t have to stress a lot during the school year, I can focus on other classes, and I can get college credits done,” said junior Aleena Manzano.
However, taking a break from learning is important for multiple different reasons. All year long students have to worry about deadlines, tests, teachers, students, and much more. Taking a break and taking time is important for your mental and physical health. Also, for many students, it helps reset your mindset for the following year.
“Taking a break from school is important to me because I definitely need that mental break from school. It can be exhausting sometimes, and having time off just lets me reset,” said junior Sophia Chaves.
Another alternative for SLOHS students wanting to stay at home this summer is Cuesta College online courses. By doing this you don’t have to go in person, but you can work online in your free time.
“I did it for health last year, and it was beneficial because I had more classes and you can maybe even graduate early,” said sophomore Tai Murgatroyd.
Summer school may not be every student’s first choice for their summer vacation, but it can play a key role in staying on track and helping students prepare for college. But, taking your break to relax and reset is also a great route to take. However, if you are interested in taking summer school this summer, email your counselor your questions because it may help you out in your future years.
