A 10 minute drive from San Luis Obispo is the beautiful town of Avila Beach. Many San Luis Obispo High School students visit Avila Beach multiple times throughout their summer vacation. From the amazing ice cream and sweet treats to learning how to surf, Avila has many amazing businesses that SLOHS students need to check out this summer.
Expressions interviewed the top three businesses in Avila Beach, The Sea Barn, Reimer’s Candies Gifts & Ice Cream, Van Curaza Surf School, about this year’s summer, and why students should visit them, but also ways to treat the beach.
Expressions: How does your store contribute to students’ summer fun?
The Sea Barn: I would say that our rentals—with our boogie boards, our wetsuits, our chairs for the day—they all contribute to having some summer fun.
Reimer’s Candies Gifts & Ice Cream: Well, in the summertime we have bubbles going all the time, which we try to kind of draw people in. Especially on Farmers Market days, we’ve been going around and doing flowers with little $5 gift certificates on them to get people to come in as well. On the 4th of July, we do face painting, and that’s for free for everybody that comes down.
Van Curaza Surf School: To help people get in the ocean, exercise, and have fun this summer [at Van Curanza] by learning something that absolutely changed my life.
Expressions: Why should students visit your store this summer?’
The Sea Barn: We have squishies now to fit the summer trends and the year trends. We also have plenty of clothes and swimsuits for you guys to try on, which could be a fun process.
Reimer’s Candies Gifts & Ice Cream: We are also trying to get either a mermaid or a merman in to do pictures this year too during the summertime. We are really just prideful in our products and we try to give the best out to everybody. If someone comes in, we do little special things for birthdays—we’ll put a happy birthday thing on there, we do little umbrellas and stuff like that. Anything that we can do to help the community around here. We also donate to other places as well.
Van Curaza Surf School: There’s opportunities here at Avila Beach. It is a beautiful place to come hang out and have a good time, and get in the ocean with us.
Expressions: Is there anything you would like to add about the beach this summer?
Van Curaza Surf School: One of the most important things is to give back to our community and leave this area better than when you found it. Then we’ll all be able to experience what we all have been for generations before us, and after us. So, aloha, and have a great time at Avila Beach!
