Boys Volleyball as a school sport isn’t until the spring, and for some, that wait is infuriating. Students at San Luis Obispo High School have decided to take matters into their own hands and create their own Instagram page @slograssvolleyball. The goal of this page is to host weekly grass volleyball meetups for those who wish to enjoy a competitive yet friendly environment suitable for all levels.
“I started it with my brother and a few friends because we wanted a fun way to play the sport we love outside of the competitive scene. It didn’t cost much at all to start so it’s easy to set up and maintain either way,” said founder and senior Canyon Davis.
It’s not a club, so not many other students on campus are aware of the event, but numbers are slowly going up each time a meet is held.
“On average we have about eight to twelve people show up. But hopefully, with the passage of time, our numbers will increase. I would recommend the grass volleyball meet-ups to others because it is a fun way to meet new people, get outside and play the sport. We encompass many players of various skill levels and are friendly to newcomers of the sport,” said co-founder and junior Brady Slowik.
The volleyball community, especially at SLO, has continued to grow and improve over the last few years, with more people beginning to respect and even enjoy the sport more.
“Personally, I hope this ‘club’ keeps on for a long time, it’s a good thing to keep going if you love volleyball. And as boys, we do get that playing volleyball is a ‘women’s sport’ and it’s seen as weird, but it’s a sport. Everyone that does sports knows that their sport isn’t easy if you’re playing competitively. So yeah, I think that there’s been a bit more appreciation for boys volleyball after this club was recognized,” said co-founder and junior Kai Pong.
The grass volleyball meetups aren’t restricted to those who play volleyball, so everybody, no matter what, is welcome. The group will almost always meet up in the afternoon on weekends only at Laguna Middle School or Meadow Park, so be there and have some fun!
