San Luis Obispo High School’s brand new dance team is impressing students with their talent. The dance team, which was founded this year, is really making an impression on students, from rally performances to halftime shows; these dancers are really putting in the work!
Some may be wondering what to expect in the future with the Dance team and what they have been up to.
None of this would have happened if it weren’t for the wonderful Mandi Mettler with her passion and love for dance. She was able to start this team, and it’s just been taking off! A special night for this team was their Senior Night, which was also the Pink Out game on October 10. The team took this time to focus on Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“In all of my dance classes, we journaled about what it means to show support — not just through performance, but through our actions. Even small gestures of kindness can give someone strength to keep fighting, and that message connects deeply with Breast Cancer Awareness,” said Dance coach Mandi Mettler.
The team showed dedication and support during this game by wearing their pink dance team T-shirts. The seniors were given a personalized sash, flower crowns from our floral design class and a heartfelt letter.
“Senior night was really amazing! Two of the sophomores on our team, Maddie and Emmie, worked with Mettler and our team moms surprise the seniors with special senior gifts,” said senior Ruby Ancheta-Johnson.
During senior night the team showered the seniors with words, like fearless, loyal, beautiful, original, inspiring, and powerful. It was emotional, beautiful, and unforgettable.
“Us seniors felt very emotional and grateful for everyone who made this night so special for us. We loved performing our halftime that highlighted the seniors while wearing our pink Dance Team shirts to support Breast Cancer,” said Ancheta-Johnson.
Their halftime dance was choreographed by Macy LePell and former student Faith Robertson. They worked incredibly hard to bring the choreography to life on the field.
“I love giving students and alumni creative leadership opportunities — choreography is where I first fell in love with dance. To see our own students experience that same growth is incredibly meaningful, and it is now part of the culture of SLOHS Dance — to create, collaborate, and tell our stories through movement,” said Mettler.
Along with students helping choreograph the Dance Team, they have also joined Varsity Cheer on the sidelines, and for the first time, they collaborated in the touchdown kickline tradition.
“We accomplished a lot we had four performances and three dances, Mettler great the teamworks great I really recommend it especially to those in Dance II,” said senior Sydney McLaughlin.
SLOHS’ dance team just keeps showing how amazing they are on the field and on the sidelines. Sadly, the season is over, but expect to see them at the next rally and give them huge applause!
