Sports Update: Sixty Year Record Shattered


  The San Luis Obispo High School spring sports are running faster than ever, with our teams playing league games across the county.
This edition of Expressions is here to cover more specific news, including previous school records broken in one day!

Track and Field
Last night at the SLO vs. Nipomo vs. Lompoc tri-meet, senior Wyatt Maulhardt broke the school records in the 100m dash and 200m dash in one meet.  His 100m dash time of 10.63 ranks him in the top 20 in the entire state of California.  His 200m dash time of 21.35 breaks a 60-year old school record and ranks him #6 in the state, #23 nationally for wind-legal marks.  Track and Field had a meet last Wednesday against Lompoc and Nipomo, while also having the West Coast Relays in Buchanan. Swim and Dive
Swim and Dive has a meet this weekend in Walnut, against 64 other teams, and another meet on the 17th against Arroyo Grande, at home. The most recent meet was the “Clovis West Invitational” in Fresno. SLOHS got 11th place out of 41.  Junior Damian Nerling and senior Matthew Perje both did really well in their sections. – freshman Bee Balicki

Girls Beach Volleyball
Girls Beach Volleyball has been crushing the competition. They had two games recently, both of which the Tigers came out victorious with a score of 3-0 against Mission Prep on April 9th, and a 2-1 win against Santa Ynez on April 10th. They are currently ranked first in the league with wins of 8-2 overall. Their next game is Tuesday, April 16th, 7:00 pm at Arroyo Grande. Come out and support Tigers! – junior Phoebe Drazsnzak

Boys Volleyball
Boys Volleyball had a game against Santa Ynez this week with a win 3-0! They are now 4-1 in league and 13-5 overall. Boys Volleyball will be facing St. Joseph on Tuesday and Templeton on Thursday. Wish them luck this week as they continue battling hard for a top spot in the league. – freshman Sarah Kelley

Last night, Varsity Baseball broke their losing streak with a 1-0 win against St. Joseph. This brought their record to 5-13. Junior Felix Stork had a fantastic performance on the mound, pitching all seven innings while only giving up one hit. On Friday, the team faces off against St. Joes again at home. – freshman Santiago Baltodano

Our SLOHS Varsity Softball team played against Orcutt Academy on Thursday. Unfortunately, after a long battle against Orcutt, our SLOHS tigers lost 7-11. We are now second in league with a 5-2 record. The next game is on Tuesday, April 16th against Santa Ynez. JV Softball has yet to win a game but are playing against Atascadero at home on Friday, April 12th. – sophomore Luca Petterson

Stunt played two league games on Wednesday, April 10th in Atascadero. They played against Atascadero, winning 15-11. They then competed against Paso Robles, losing 10-15. The next stunt game is on Wednesday, April 17th at Paso Robles High School. – sophomore Ruby Blackburn

Boys Golf

Varsity Golf had a tournament on Wednesday, April 10th at Hunter Ranch Golf Course, with sophomore MJ Shepard winning it all, with a stunning score of 74. Although MJ won, the team placed second to Arroyo Grande. The next tournament is on Monday, April 15th at Cypress Ridge Golf Course. – freshman Miles Blackwell

Boys Tennis
Boys Tennis is currently 13-4 as they enter their league preliminary games. Last Thursday, Varsity played Mission and had a successful senior night, winning the match. On Wednesday, April 17th, the team will start league prelims here at SLOHS. – sophomore Vyolet Burrus
