San Luis Obispo High School freshmen have opinions on switching from a semester system at Laguna to trimesters in high school. After getting used to this adjustment, one thing becomes clear. SLOHS should remain on the trimester system despite Cal Poly’s switch over, not only because students are used to it, but also because it opens opportunities for more diverse electives and courses.
Our SLOHS freshmen agree that having a trimester system here at SLOHS is better than having the semester system at Laguna Middle School.
“I feel like the transition wasn’t that major because it was easy to transition, it just feels longer than it really is,” said freshman Diosmar Lopez.
Freshmen have said that the transitions in the trimester system from one schedule to another are seamless and that they didn’t even notice there was a difference between the two systems.
SLOHS freshmen were asked if they think that trimesters are too fast of a pace or just the right amount of time to get work done, most students say that it’s just the right pace and that if you don’t enjoy a teacher’s class, you’ll just be leaving it by the end of the trimester anyway.
“It’s good because it gives us just the right amount of time to get comfortable, and if you don’t like a teacher you’re just going to leave them anyway,” said freshman Aveline Erlin.
Along with changing schedules each trimester, students also get to meet new teachers and get to learn new learning strategies.
“I like changing teachers every trimester because there are different teaching strategies,” said freshman Reese Garrett.
Some of our freshmen also say that it is easier to switch teachers because the trimester system is shorter and less time with your teachers in each trimester.
“The fact that you can switch teachers faster and more easily, but they are also seamless transitions,” said Erlin.
Students at SLOHS like trimesters better than semesters because of the amount of time you get to complete work from each class but also because of switching classes at the end of each trimester and getting to learn new learning strategies from different teachers.
This month, as the SLOHS Staff prepares to vote on a trimester or Semester system, teachers should listen to the freshmen and keep the current system.
