What+Happened+in+the+2010s%3F

As the 2010s wrap up, San Luis Obispo High School students reflect on the highs, lows, successes, and dramatic changes of the decade. Whether you’re a senior heading to college with 2020 vision or you’re a freshman trying to navigate High School, Expressions set out to see how SLOHS students feel about wrapping up the 2010s.

“My favorite song of the decade was ‘Voice Mail’ by Shordie Shordie. My favorite memory from this decade was being in Auto, and I am looking forward to meeting new people in college during 2020,” said senior Drake Rucks.

Throughout the 2010’s the world changing app, Snapchat, was released. As students surfed the social media wave, Tech Decks, Fidget Spinners, and the Gangnam Style dance flooded the classrooms and the lives of students became entirely electronic.

“I think ‘Lift Yourself’ by Kanye West was the best song of the decade. My favorite show was ‘Game of Thrones’. The best moment of the 2010s was Hillary’s election. In 2020, I look forward to experiencing first hand the deterioration of our relationship with Kim Jong Un and his nuclear arsenal,” said senior Max Waldorf.

Throughout the 2010s the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.755, whereas in the 1970s it was $1.19.  The price for a movie ticket at The Downtown Cinemas in the 2010’s was $12.50 and in the 1960s it was 69 cents. The minimum wage in the 2010’s was $11.00, during the 1950s it was only 75 cents an hour. The median price for a home in California during the 2010s was $502,600, the presidents from throughout the 2010s decade were Barack Obama and Donald Trump and the highest paid singer in the 2010s was Taylor Swift at 185 million dollars.

“If I could describe the 2010 decade in one word it would be ‘stressful’, but the best part for me was when I became Tik Tok famous and got over one million views,” said senior Kaley DeRose.

SLOHS students has a tremendous time during the 2010s, but did teachers feel the same way?

“I would describe this decade as “momentous.”  The best moment would be Greta Thunberg’s sailing across the Atlantic and speaking at the UN Climate Conference. I hope that the upcoming decade will be a decade of positive change for our climate and environment,” said Latin teacher Tom Weinschenk

Although we all live in an evolving and ever changing world, we all know that SLOHS students are bound for success in any decade.
