When the new movie “Project Hail Mary” hit theaters, it was an instant hit among San Luis Obispo High School students.
The movie was released as an adaptation of the popular book of the same name by author Andy Weir, and it instantly became a sensational success. Starring actor Ryan Gosling as the lead protagonist and sole surviving crew member on his spaceship, the Hail Mary, who has to regain his memories and figure out his purpose and how to survive.
“I really liked how it ended up very similar to the book. The details and graphics were great,” said sophomore Hazel Bombardieri.
The movie follows Ryland Grace as he wakes up from a coma on a spaceship without his memories, and he has to slowly remember his mission and how he will survive. He meets an alien spaceship that will be his companion through the movie. It has a story that is compelling to many people, with themes of friendship and the capacity for sacrifice that resonate with the masses.
“The main thing that impressed me was the fact that they were able to put so much personality and character into the side character who is essentially a rock, his name is literally Rocky, he can only speak through a translator, yet he still has more personality than ninety percent of the aliens from ‘Avatar,’” said sophomore Corbin Gary.
The movie has received positive reviews all around, making $30 million at the box office on opening day alone. Worldwide it has earned over $425 million as of today. Many students have enjoyed the movie for its engaging plot and story.
“I thought it was very surprising where the story was going. I felt that every twenty minutes something happened that would keep you on the edge of your seat,” said sophomore Kaden Gearhart.
Overall, “Project Hail Mary” has been a huge hit, garnering huge success, and being the second highest grossing film of 2026.
