Former San Luis Obispo High School teacher and current Cal Poly professor Kevin Coulombe was arrested February 18 on suspicion of multiple child exploitation charges, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the 38 year old is accused of contacting a minor with the intent to have sex as part of an ongoing investigation.
“By combining the most outrageous real life experiences and hardcore physics, new teacher Kevin Coulombe has been blowing students’ minds since the first day of school,” said Expressions reporter Belle Caffee in a 2016 interview with Coulombe during his first year at SLOHS.
In a news release, sheriff’s officials said Coulombe faces charges that include contacting a minor for sexual purposes and arranging a meeting with a minor. Detectives served search warrants at his residence, his vehicle and at Cal Poly, where he was employed at the time of his arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Coulombe most recently worked as an instructional support technician in the physics department at Cal Poly. Before his employment at the university, he previously worked as a teacher at SLOHS and Menlo-Atherton High school in Atherton, California.
“He only worked at SLOHS from 2016-2017 as the physics teacher,” said Expressions Adviser Scott Nairne.
Because Coulombe previously worked at SLOHS, news of the arrest has drawn attention within the local school community. As of publication, no additional information has been released regarding his time at the high school.
The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with additional information related to the case to contact its Detective Division.
