The Farmers’ Market hasn’t changed a bit, it remains iconically the same! The first photo was taken downtown in 2002 and the second was taken downtown on Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo in 1991. Photo courtesy of SFGATE.com by Spud Hilton and DowntownSLO.com
San Luis Obispo’s Farmers’ market has been running since 1983. The history behind this community event was to oppose “cruising” which was popular in the late 70s where loud cars drove away shoppers downtown. Downtown SLO is known to be an iconic location for both foreigners and tourists, the city being known for this occurrence has been a great game changer.
Expressions decided to interview a few of our students to evaluate their outlook on how Farmers Market has benefited them and what they think of the fun and engaging event.
Expressions: Do you enjoy downtown SLO often? If so, what do you think of San Luis Obispo’s Farmers’ Market?
Freshman Genevieve Kolesnikov: Yes, I enjoy going to downtown SLO often. I really like the San Luis Obispo Farmers’ Market because it has a fun, lively atmosphere with great food, local vendors, and live music. It’s a nice place to spend time with friends and family while supporting local businesses.
Sophomore Naisha Bhatnagar: I really enjoy downtown SLO a lot, and I find the farmers’ market very fun.
Expressions: How has this engaging event benefited you or affected your life?
Kolesnikov: This event has benefited me by giving me opportunities to meet new people and engage with the community. I enjoy talking to vendors, connecting with others, and experiencing the welcoming atmosphere. It makes me feel more involved and connected to downtown SLO.
Bhatnagar: I think going to the farmers’ market every Thursday with my friends is really fun and makes me feel better.
Expressions: If there was one thing you could change about downtown SLO or our Farmers’ Market event, what would it be?
Kolesnikov: If I could change one thing, I would add more seating areas so people can comfortably sit, eat, and enjoy the music. It would make the experience even better.
Bhatnagar: I wouldn’t really change anything.
Downtown SLO is fun to explore nearly every day of the week. Enjoying the heart of this city is a local charm. Not only is it close to our high school, but Cal Poly’s lively energy also pieces its heart together. The Farmers’ market is held every Thursday evening, filled with local farm stands; delicious street food and live music and entertainment. Tigers, let’s engage more!
