The TV show Community ran from 2009 to 2014, but it’s still of cultural significance to San Luis Obispo High School students. Two Expressions reporters and fans of the show discuss their experiences as fans, their thoughts on the show, and whether the elusive “six seasons and a movie” will ever come into fruition.
Senior Wesley Bisheff: Naturally, we should start out by talking about the ending of the show. Do you feel like the show ended properly?
Junior Bear Medici: I felt like the final season wasn’t as strong as the other seasons, but I think it ended okay.
Bisheff: I see where you’re coming from. It definitely felt like it got super weird, and that’s something I appreciate. That said, it almost felt like the show lost some of the character with some of the later seasons, with the change of writers and the loss of so many iconic characters. It definitely wasn’t the most satisfying way to end it.
Medici: Who’s your favorite character?
Bisheff: Definitely Abed. His dynamic with Troy is priceless and easily my favorite part of the show. The way he makes the show meta is what brings it from a normal sitcom to something a little more special. Do you like it when the show gets weirder, or do you prefer it when it’s more grounded, more of a vanilla sitcom?
Medici: I think it has some stronger points when it’s more grounded, but overall, I enjoy the weird episodes more. What’s your favorite medium the show takes on?
Bisheff: I’d have to say the claymation episode is my favorite in terms of unique medium. I think it’s super cool how Abed transitions the whole show into something entirely different– almost a parody of a different style while still retaining its own character.
Bisheff: Is the infamous Community movie ever going to happen? For years, they’ve been saying the movie is gonna happen, and I heard recently Donald Glover confirmed that. That said, it feels like they just keep delaying and delaying it, and it’s hard to still be optimistic.
Medici: I don’t really think it’s going to happen, and even if it does, I don’t think it will be as strong as the show is with some of the characters not returning given some controversies within the cast.
Bisheff: Do you still want it to happen?
Medici: I think it would be good if it were to happen. There’s no negatives if it happens. Would you recommend this show to a friend or not?
Bisheff: Absolutely. It is one of my favorite shows ever. “Community” is more than just a sitcom. It’s meta, it’s funny, it’s weird, and it is definitely rewatchable.
Medici: I would definitely recommend this show. It’s really funny with strong characters, and it’s just a good experience throughout every episode.
