San Luis Obispo High School students are excited to go to prom ever since the release of the theme. The students planning the event are under pressure to live up to the students expectations. On May 9, 2026 the magical day will be held and filled with staff and students dancing.
“This year we have more like a whole class planning prom, which is a lot easier. But I would say, I don’t think people realize how much money and time and effort goes into planning prom. There’s so much behind the scenes you have to do so much setting up, cleaning up the night of prom, and just so many other things that people don’t realize that you have to do to make this whole event successful,” said senior Carly Sass.
Prom in the US gets hyped up so much but does real life live up to the expectations? Some may say it was really fun and a “big moment”, but others may say it was awkward and overhyped. Not everyone has a big “movie moment”. It is a fun memory because of the people you are with not because it’s a perfect thing. Every person has a different experience.
“I’ve worked in event planning for years, and I’ve worked for really high end catering. So when I took over. I feel like one of the biggest things was being able to bring a more elevated craft to it,” said Fashion and Intro to Leadership teacher Leone Avery.
This year’s prom has taken months and months of planning to get to the end goal in May. Multiple classes and the junior class officers have worked to craft this magical event at the Avila Golf Course. Tina Gonzalez and Chris Estrada and Althea Toribio, the junior class officers have had countless days of thinking.
“The biggest stress is definitely on how we spend money and how we have to be very careful with what we want to spend our money on. Another stressful thing would be selecting visual aspects that will enhance the environment and the vibe of Y2K prom to get everyone excited,” said junior class officer Tina Gonzalez.
Money management is a huge thing with trying to not to become in debt and wanting to stay in budget with every item purchased. The students are working with companies to find items and purchase.
This is the one event students want to attend and make it a memorable experience and night of the high school years. The ASB class all hopes students can join this Saturday.
