The majority of our community at San Luis Obispo High School grew up with the best nostalgic and early 2000s TV shows. Some even shaped most of us to be who we are today. With these gems of our past, if you could pick a character from Disney or any cartoon network, who would you choose to be and why?
“I would choose to be the Genie from Disney’s ‘Aladdin’. The primary reason is the incredible amount of power and freedom the character possesses. While bound by the rules of the lamp, the Genie is virtually omnipotent within his role, able to shape-shift, travel instantaneously, and grant wishes that defy the laws of physics. Beyond the raw power, the Genie is also defined by his vibrant personality, sense of humor, and the ability to bring joy and fundamental change to people’s lives—most notably, freeing Aladdin from his constraints and ultimately achieving his own freedom. The combination of limitless potential and a cheerful, impactful existence makes it a highly appealing character to embody,” said freshman Herschel Joyce.
Growing up with these curated characters, we acknowledged the indistinct possibilities in ourselves and in our futures even as kids. A lot of students see themselves in some of their favorite princesses and princes. Because we formed aspirations and attachments to many from watching them on television.
“I think the character I would choose is Pimm, the pink little guy from Smiling Friends because he is always so positive and happy. And if I was him for a day I would try to make other people smile and happy,” said senior Carlos Vargas.
Teens should watch more Disney movies to improve their social and emotional lessons and inspire creatively. These timeless films are good for the sense of nostalgia and gratitude. Go back to your roots, it’s to foster belonging in a time of your life where you are determined to be something great!
“If I could be a cartoon character for a day I would be Snoopy because he lives such a dynamic, adventurous life! For the day, I would try to recreate as many of his comic strips as possible so I could experience his life to the fullest,” said senior Olivia Harmon.
After all, we were all kids at one point. With hopes and understanding, every character has their own story just as we do and that is what’s important!
