Students at San Luis Obispo High school take their food opinions very seriously, especially when it comes to sandwiches. For years students have argued over which local sandwich spot does it best. Expressions wanted to take a closer look, so we asked students across campus to share their favorite spots and explain what keeps them coming back. With so many local sandwich shops competing for the top spot only one question remains; what is SLOHS students’ favorite sandwich spot?
“High Street Deli is the best sandwich shop in SLO, it is kind of iconic because it is a local shop that is a tourist attraction because it tastes so good,” said senior Vaughn Otto.
Some people may wonder why it is so important to know which sandwich spot is best.
“Two-thirds of adult lunch consumers have one or more mixed dishes at this meal on the intake day, and half of those individuals consume a sandwich,” according to the National Library of Medicine, making sandwiches the most popular lunch dish in America.
With that said, SLOHS takes the sandwich game seriously. SLO has multiple local sandwich shops that please the pallet, but not all students think local shops do it the best.
“I love Jersey Mikes and I think it is better than local spots like High Street and Lincoln Deli because of their variety of subs and with the Mike’s Way combo it is unbeatable,” said junior Trey Walter.
Not every student agreed on the same sandwich spot.
“Mr. Pickle’s is the best, their menu is huge and the customer service is high quality. They always get what you need,” said sophomore Henry Wilkes.
Although students may disagree on which restaurant deserves the top spot, one thing is clear: sandwiches are a big part of student culture at SLOHS. Whether students prefer local favorites like High Street Deli and Mr Pickles or chain restaurants like Jersey Mike’s, everyone seems to have a strong opinion on where to grab the perfect sandwich.
