San Luis Obispo High School students are struggling to decide their opinions on Artificial Intelligence, but most are simply ignoring the downsides. This is leading towards strong opinions among the students and a lot of students being blinded by the lazy benefits.
“They use water to cool their AI buildings as they heat up quickly from generating responses and images,” said freshman Benjamin Patague.
Unfortunately only a handful of students understand the consequences of artificial intelligence and therefore don’t abuse its benefits. Some try to understand the consequences but succumb to the stress of their situations, forcing them to go back to using AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.
“I use AI when I am confused about my school work and it teaches me how to do it,” said freshman Geoffrey Bodemer.
Many students in SLOHS use artificial intelligence during stressful situations or when trying to get a start to understand their work. While they may understand the consequences a lot of students don’t care enough to avoid using it once the work starts piling up.
“Let’s say you’re trying to become a doctor and you’re using AI the whole time, and you don’t know what to do,” said junior Shaheen El Khyari.
Even some upperclassmen are using AI to assist them in their work. Some of them, however, understand that there might be downsides to it.
In some situations, AI can be helpful, but often Artificial Intelligence can lead to negative outcomes and possibly even be dangerous to the ecosystem.
