With spring sports right around the corner, the San Luis Obispo High School softball program has already started up. As such, softball coach Sheila McGuire has been rigorously preparing for the upcoming season. Expressions decided to talk to her in order to learn about the upcoming softball season.
Expressions: How long have you been working in the SLOHS softball program?
Softball coach Sheila McGuire: I have been the SLOHS softball coach for three seasons. Before I coming here I was the head coach at Cuesta College.
Expressions: How has this program grown/developed over the time that you’ve worked here?
McGuire: My first season here was successful, as we were able to capture a league title for the first time in a long time. That was pretty exciting for our girls, they earned it for sure! They adopted an attitude of team first and worked very hard for the title. We were able to play two rounds of CIF before we were eliminated. Last year we came in second place. We had a few heartbreaking losses to Atascadero that cost us the league title.
Expressions: How are you feeling about the upcoming season compared to past years?
McGuire: I am excited about the young talent coming in, as well as the returning players and the pitching talent we have. We are working very hard, each and every day.
Expressions: What do you want readers to know about the softball program and this upcoming season?
McGuire: Softball is super exciting to watch, and we would love the support of the student body. We have fun competing and each year we adopt a new theme to carry throughout the season.
Expressions: Anything inspirational to impart onto SLOHS students?
McGuire: Believe in yourself, believe in your teammates, and success will follow.
Expressions: When are the first games of the season for both teams?
McGuire: Our first games are on February 16, versus Pioneer Valley.
