As summer approaches and most students begin thinking about vacations and time off, members of the San Luis Obispo High School football team are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. Players have returned to the field for preseason practices, spending long hours conditioning, lifting weights and learning new plays in hopes of building a successful campaign this fall.
With the first game still months away, preseason practices serve as the foundation for the team’s season. Coaches and players alike are focused on improving fundamentals, developing team chemistry and establishing the discipline needed to compete throughout the year.
“I don’t really mind the preseason practices, I think it’s important for the team to get a great start to the season,” said sophomore William Riley.
Practices typically include conditioning drills, position-specific training and team scrimmages. While the physical demands can be challenging, many players view the summer workouts as an opportunity to improve both individually and as a team.
“Everyone is pushing each other to get better, I think it’s a great opportunity,” said junior Aiden Sandoval.
New and returning players are also using preseason practices to strengthen relationships and create a positive team culture.
“Honestly, I don’t really like practicing in the summer. I think we start really early and it doesn’t give me time to relax after the school year ends,” said an anonymous junior.
As temperatures rise and practices continue throughout the summer, the Tigers remain focused on preparing for the challenges ahead. While wins and losses won’t be recorded for several more months, the effort being displayed now could play a major role in determining the outcome of the season.
When the first whistle blows this fall, the results of countless hours spent practicing under the summer sun will finally be put to the test.
