As the 2026 season of college basketball comes to a close, so does the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) March Madness. San Luis Obispo High School students have been streaming these games in class, and the topic of wins and losses has been the talk of the school.
The NCAA March Madness tournament is one of the most exciting events in American sports. It brings together 68 of the best teams in college basketball each year for thrilling games in an elimination formatted tournament. Many people all around the globe tend to create brackets for this event. Many SLOHS students partake in creating a bracket in hopes to win.
“All the games were good and there were a bunch of upsets and buzzer beaters this year. The Kentucky game was super exciting considering the half court shot,” said junior Jackson Gillett.
Although the Kentucky game was exciting, the talk of the school was the Uconn vs. Duke game. In this game, athlete Braylon Mullins put up a 3 point game-winning shot.
“That Uconn shot was insane. I wish that Uconn won, but Michigan was a really strong team. I feel like during classes everyone was watching the games, and overall it was a thrilling season,” said sophomore Alberta Horzen.
For many students, the actual games are the biggest part of March Madness; although, many people see the social media posts and it attracts viewers.
“There were a lot of baddies playing, that’s mainly why I watched it this year. And, the Duke edits are really funny,” said sophomore Saqqara Guilford.
This season didn’t stand out because of the results, but because of how every moment built community, and fueled conversation. Each game felt unpredictable, with constant shifts with movement within each game. This tournament wasn’t just an ordinary March Madness season, it was one that enthralled viewers, and sparked conversation. The 2026 March Madness season received incredible praise, resulting in a hype that will carry through to next year’s season. Stay tuned, Tigers! March madness will return!
