Cosmic Groove: A Celestial Playlist

Far+galaxy
Far galaxy

Music often transports us to different states of mind, but what about different galaxies? Journey to the stars through this cosmic playlist, just in time for summer.

  1. “Blow” – Beyoncé

This may seem like an odd choice, but the space themes of this classic track truly emerge in the video. Neon colors, black light, and roller skates prevail.

  1. “Starman” – David Bowie

No space-themed playlist is complete without one (or several) tracks from David Bowie, the ultimate extraterrestrial. This lovely song encapsulates the spacey 1970s.

  1. “Genesis” – Grimes

Grimes may be the perfect example of space queen. This track is replete with synthesizers, duplicated voice tracks, and whimsical lyrics.

  1. “Soda” – Azealia Banks

Another somewhat unlikely addition, but something about the electronic beat and harmonizing vocals always reminds me of the unknown beauty of space.

  1. “Use Once and Destroy” – Hole

The best way to describe this track is industrial. The driving bassline and almost mechanical vocals are reminiscent of the more robotic aspects of space lore.

  1. “Under Your Spell” – Desire

This strangely beautiful song comes from the “Drive” soundtrack, and brings images of a cosmic Los Angeles to mind.

  1. “Huey Newton” – St. Vincent

The celestial quality of this track is enhanced by St. Vincent’s undoubtedly android-esque live performances, which recall the stage presence of Bowie himself.

  1. “Cosmic Dancer” – T. Rex

Much like Bowie, Marc Bolan of T. Rex contributed greatly to the glam rock/robot aesthetic of the early 1970s.

  1. “Cassiopeia” – Joanna Newsom

This wonderfully weird track is literally named after a constellation. Newsom plucks away at her harp, yowling with her notorious voice, making it thoroughly enjoyable.

  1. “Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois” – Sufjan Stevens

Subdued, soft, and reflective, this is the perfect way to end your celestial travels.
