Noah Kahan just released a new album called “The Great Divide,” and students at San Luis Obispo High School have been listening non-stop.
“The Great Divide” marks a major moment in Noah Kahan’s career, blending his folk pop music with a more emotional side. The album explores themes like mental health, growing up, fractured friendships, home life, all while expanding his music and finding his true self.
“He poured a lot of effort into this album. I remember him saying that when he wrote his last albums he was less experienced but thought he did really well, but this album he tried to meet a deeper level of songwriting by going into sensitive topics of his life for each song,” said sophomore Kate Fouhy.
His songwriting has shown growth over the years of his publishing, and many of his fans have noticed that. His deeper level of songwriting has helped listeners connect more closely with his music.
“I love his new album. I love the vibes and how every song tells a different story. The whole album feels very bittersweet, and my favorites right now are ‘All Them Horses,’ ‘Staying Still’ and ‘Haircut,’” said sophomore Lyla Baird.
Each song explores an emotional theme that bends with nostalgia and personal growth. Some say the album feels repetitive, but the song writing is completely different as each song represents something different.
“The new Noah Kayan album is so nostalgic. It’s a reinvention of his last album stick season where it’s more refined and cohesive throughout. ‘End of August’ is my favorite song on the album. Though the album is great, it feels repetitive a bit since it is pretty long. But overall the album is really emotionally heavy where it addresses sitting in uncomfortable feelings and distance which is what makes it so nice to listen to since it lets people connect to it,” said sophomore Sam Pearson.
Kahan builds on his past work while leaning further into vulnerability. This new album is something many students at SLOHS can connect to for years on.
Tigers, go listen to this new album! Check him out on tour as he comes through California in August.
