2026 is going to be a huge year for movies, with tons of big releases like “The Mandalorian & Grogu or “Avengers: Doomsday.”
How are San Luis Obispo High School students and teachers feeling about the future of cinema this year?
“I am hopeful 2026 will be a great year for movies! There is a healthy balance between sequels from beloved franchises like “Toy Story”, “Star Wars”, “Scream 7”, “Marvel’s Avengers”, Dune, Spider-Man, and some more indie and niche films,” said English and Film Studies teacher Meg Higdon.
2026 has been looked forward to by many movie fans, as big movie releases are coming from many popular directors like Christopher Nolan.
“I think 2026 is going to be a good year for movies with titles such as “Avengers: Doomsday”, The “Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, and “The Odyssey,” said sophomore Timothy Ponce.
Last year, in 2025, many of the movies released were add-ons to series with already three or four previous movies in the series. This year also has some movies like this, including Toy Story 5 and Scream 7 (7 is a bit of a stretch), but this year also includes some newer movies like “The Odyssey”and “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Some of the movies expected to do the best this year are “Goat”, “Iron Lung”, and “Avengers Doomsday”, according to IMDb.com.
“I don’t really watch a lot of movies, but I am really excited to see ‘The Odyssey’ when it comes out, as it is one of my favorite stories. I also really like Christopher Nolan’s movies like ‘Interstellar’ and The Dark Knight movies,'” said senior Finn Selman.
Overall, this year is going to be pretty awesome in the cinema, so make sure to head down to see a movie a few times this year! It’s always better in the theater.
Shout out to The Palm.
