Summer is approaching at San Luis Obispo High School, and many students are searching for unique jobs to make money. With California Polytechnic State University students leaving San Luis Obispo for the summer, there are plenty of job opportunities for high school students opening up. Expressions sat down with senior Zhayle Piurque to learn more about different jobs other than retail that students can get involved with.
Expressions: Where do you work?
Senior Zhayle Piurque: I work at Better Business Financial Services.
Expressions: What do they do?
Piurque: There are four accountants who take care of taxes and financial issues each month; they’re especially busy because it’s tax season right now. There’s also a payroll department for different businesses to come in and have our company add up their paychecks for them.
Expressions: What are your responsibilities in the office?
Piurque: I run errands, scan documents, file, and other receptionist duties. Basically, helping out where they need it.
Expressions: How would you compare a desk job environment to a retail job SLOHS students might have?
Piurque: It’s smaller, so you get to know your co-workers better than you would at a clothing store or a food place. You get a lot of work experience in a professional setting. And it’s way more flexible than a retail job.
Expressions: Do you think offices like yours are interested in hiring teenagers?
Piurque: Depends on the business. I know that law firms typically like to hire high schoolers since they can run errands. But yeah, I would check out some law firms in the area to see if they’re hiring.
