The incoming freshmen at San Luis Obispo High School are buzzing with excitement as they prepare to leave middle school behind and step into a brand-new environment. Their reasons vary- sports, electives, new friends, and new opportunities- but one thing is clear: they’re ready for a change of scenery and a fresh start. What they don’t know yet is just how much their social and academic lives are about to transform.
“I don’t think it will be too bad, I’m excited for the electives because there are a lot of good ones. I might play golf,” says next year freshman Bode Cover.
Sports are a major draw for many incoming students. High school athletics offer more opportunities to grow. For future golfers, practices at Dairy Creek come with perks like a Dairy Creek Card, which lowers range ball prices from $15 to just $1 per bucket and reduces the cost to play to only $5. Of course, excitement is often mixed with nerves. Meeting new people is one of the biggest unknowns for middle schoolers transitioning to high school.
“Yeah, I’m excited for high school because I’ll meet new people and hopefully make a big group of friends,” said next year freshman Kaelyn Owen.
The welcoming environment at SLOHS helps freshmen connect through sports, classes, clubs, and shared interests. For many students, forming friendships- especially with upperclassmen- becomes one of the most memorable parts of freshman year.
“I’m excited for SLOHS theater program because it is supposed to be really good and we just won that big award for the Urinetown. Also, how big the school is,” said next year freshman Avery Anmagon.
SLOHS theater program is a major step up from middle school productions. The school’s plays and musicals are known for their quality, giving freshmen a chance to showcase their talents on a much bigger stage.
Overall, the incoming freshmen are eager to leave middle school behind and step into a larger, more dynamic environment. With the ongoing construction at Laguna Middle School, this year has been especially challenging for eighth graders, making the transition to high school feel even more rewarding. As they look ahead, these students are ready for new opportunities, new friendships, and a fresh start at San Luis Obispo High School.
