As the 2026 FIFA (International Federation of Association Football) World Cup approaches, San Luis Obispo High School students are excited to take a blast to the past by watching these games during school.
The World Cup is a soccer event where teams across the globe compete against each other to see who is the best. This event happens every four years, and this year there are 48 teams competing. These teams will be split up into twelve groups of four with the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-place teams advancing to a new round of 32. This event will take place in eleven different spots in the US, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. Many SLOHS students may even go to some games as many games will be in Los Angeles at Sofi Stadium or in San Francisco at Levi’s Stadium.
“I’m gonna watch all of the games I can but I’m not gonna go because the tickets are insanely expensive,” said senior Miles Blackwell.
Lots of students who are not soccer lovers learned about the World Cup in 2022. Students across the globe took part in watching the games on their chromebook during class and many teachers would take time out of their periods to watch the games with their classes. There were many edits and TikTok audios that made this event so enjoyable to watch, and many of our SLOHS want to relive those special moments.
“I’m not sure if it will be better than the 2022 World Cup because it was so good, but it will be very different I think because the world cup is in such a different environment this year that it will be interesting to watch,” said junior Addison Hopple.
Many beloved players will be playing in this tournament, fans and athletes are excited to watch these intense moments with their favorite players.
“It will be very entertaining because Messi is still playing and hasn’t retired yet and people will want him to defend the title from the last world cup. also it’s in the US which will be more entertaining for people here,” said junior June Scott.
The World Cup is more than just any ordinary tournament, it’s a global event that brings together countries and fans through the love of a game that is played worldwide. This event continues to create history every four years and reminds us why soccer is considered the one of the best worldwide games.
However, the real question is, will this tournament continue to get better? Or will the hype die down sooner than many people think?
