The new Business Club at San Luis Obispo High School has stepped into the world of entrepreneurship by launching its own student run clothing brand called Kaplan. The release of their first hoodie drop has created excitement within not just students but teachers as well.
Designed and marketed by students, the hoodie represents more than just merch; it shows young entrepreneurs paving their own path and using creativity and collaboration to create a real world business experience that is catching everyone’s eye.
“What first caught my eye is the unique logo of the hoodie. I thought it was cool and then when I tried it on, the quality was super soft and I knew I had to buy it,” said junior Jonathan Weyel.
With so many different competitors in the clothing industry Kaplan needed to find a way to stand out and give customers a reason to choose their hoodie over others.
Owner of Business Club junior Simon Gower took the club and formed it into Kaplan, all members of the club fulfill different roles for the brand. Gower gave Expressions insight on the creation of Kaplan and the behind the scenes work done to get it where it is today.
“My whole thing with Business Club was that I wanted all the members to have a say and we had a group vote deciding to choose a clothing brand as our group business, then from their choosing the design we wanted a unique style that would catch peoples eye so we went for a old money european type of vibe with the hoodie and I think it fit in good with the trends going on in today and that’s why people like it so much,” said Gower.
Kaplan shows a great example of what a group of students can create by working together and using their creativity to create something great.
Creating a clothing brand and being able to maintain it in today’s society filled with so many different companies.
The harsh reality is that approximately 98 percent of clothing startup brands fail within their first few years.
This stat is daunting and a hard percentage to beat. We asked Kaplan’s marketing director what are the future steps to beat this statistic.
“Our next steps to further our success is to continue to post on Tiktok and post our model pictures on Instagram to stay relevant in the media,” said marketing director and junior Eli Dorfman.
Kaplan is looking forward to growing more and more, and if students wish to support their business they can find their store front on Instagram @kaplan.us.
