On February 27, singer-songwriter Mitski released her eighth studio album “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me,” and fans at San Luis Obispo High School are ecstatic.
The album features the same band she toured with in her previous album, “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We,” and consists of eleven songs ranging from soft and desperate to loud and eccentric, accompanied by Mitski’s thought-provoking lyrics.
“I was excited [when the album came out], having tuned into more popular songs like ‘Where’s My Phone’ and ‘If I Leave’ first,” said sophomore Melisa Tapia.
The album, along with the promotional material and music videos posted on social media, illustrates a strange character living in an old Victorian house called the “Tansy House.” Many of the songs, such as “I’ll Change for You” and “Dead Woman,” touch on the complexities of solitude, isolation, and death.
“The general character I had in mind for this album concept is this sort of reclusive, weird woman living alone in an old house,” Mitski said in a radio interview. “I wanted to explore a house as a person’s mind and all the stuff accumulating in an old house, like the various generational traumas that might accumulate in a person’s mind.”
The album has received good reviews, with an aggregate rating of 8.4 out 10, according to the website Any Decent Music. However, some find the album repetitive and underwhelming. Despite this, many fans still enjoy Mitski’s songwriting.
“This album definitely holds some really impactful lyrics and themes,” said senior Chloe Elliott. “I think the way Mitski expresses both isolation and the allure of death are done in such an artful way where you can really feel the weight of her emotions.”
Overall, fans seem to enjoy “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.” If you haven’t yet, go and have a listen!
