San Luis Obispo High School’s athletes work hard year round, dedicating themselves to their sport regardless of the season. Softball held training during the fall to introduce new players, and are now starting pre-season training back up to prepare for tryouts in the spring.
“As far as training goes, a lot of us know how things roll already. It’s just a matter of getting back into the groove, and back in shape after the off-season,” said Softball captain and senior Brooklyn Michel.
The team is currently holding weekly practices every Thursday for interested players. While they may be tough, they are essential for growth. Practices include batting drills, weight training, and sprints, designed to strengthen players’ already existent skills and develop new ones.
It’s also important for new players to attend these practices in order to improve their relationships with teammates.
“With tryouts coming up, our goal as a team this season is to move as a unit and push through any challenges we may face along the way. I have been able to lead as captain for the past three years and out of all of them this season really gets me the most excited,” said Michel.
Last year the team ended the season with a 15-11-1 record, even placing second in the CCAA league. Through rigorous training and consistent practices, the team is hopeful for another successful season.
“One of my biggest goals for the season ahead is to improve my pitching skills and refine my technique for how the ball leaves my hand…The preseason training has helped a lot in quickening the reaction time to different in-game situations and fine-tuning some more mental parts of the game,” said junior Taylor Wakeman.
All players are welcome to try out, whether a beginner or an experienced player.
“The team dynamic is very down to earth. All the girls understand how one other feels, but we still try to push each other to achieve,” said freshman Carolyn Juretic.
Try outs are February 9 through 13, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the SLOHS Softball Field. More information about try outs, practices, and games can be found on Instagram @slohs.softball.
Tigers, if interested in playing Softball this season, definitely give tryouts a shot!
