After a lot of hard work from club members and advisors, the San Luis Obispo High School Theatre Club has officially joined the International Thespian Society (ITS) as a school troupe, and actors and crew alike have submitted their applications to become members.
“ITS membership depends on a point-based system. To become a member, you need ten points to qualify, and you obtain points by being a part of theatre-related activities both as an actor or as a part of the crew”, said senior and theatre club president Frida Vega.
Founded in 1929, the International Thespian Society is a national honor society for middle school and high school theatre students. Membership in the society provides students with opportunities and resources beyond what their school may be able to provide, such as scholarships and grants for individuals or programs.
“I think this is a great opportunity for any budding young thespian who is looking to grow their skills”, said junior and theatre club member Lucia McCarthy-Zirion.
Participating school troupes and individual students can earn recognition for their talents at festivals, where they can compete in many different categories for both actors and technical crew members.
“I will be in the festival held in Arroyo Grande, but if we qualify I would love to attend both festivals! We haven’t decided who is competing in what just yet, but I would be open to compete in any acting or musical theatre competitions” said Vega.
The SLOHS Troupe is planning on attending their first festival on January 18, 2025, in Arroyo Grande. This new status as a troupe will greatly benefit all eligible Tiger actors, who work so hard to achieve their goals and showcase their skills.
