San Luis Obispo High School students need their coffee, and they deserve the best coffee in town. Many students also take their homework to local cafés with a good study vibe.

With a wide variety of local coffee shops for students to choose from, they should make sure they’re getting the best coffee, environment, and overall experience for their study session.

“Finding a good coffee shop to get caffeinated, study at, and hang with friends at is essential,” said the owners of Skippers Brew Karen Pike and Shari Rubino.

A favorite in town is Skippers Brew. They opened up their second location on 1242 Monterey Street in February 2021. It is only a ten-minute walk from SLOHS. Their other location was in Morro Bay. It has become very popular with students and is known to be LGBTQ+ friendly. Students agree that it has some of the best coffee in SLO.

If someone was looking for a good study environment, a popular option would be Linnaea’s. It has been a favored spot since it opened in 1984. It has a welcoming outdoor area, with cute chairs, plants, and it’s commonly described as cozy or peaceful.

However, it isn’t very favorable for online school work.

“Linnaea’s has a good outdoor/indoor environment, but the wifi isn’t very dependable. Kreuzberg is perfect for studying. It’s quiet and has good connection,” said senior Savanna Henderson-Witt.

Despite the seemingly endless list of coffee shop options, there are a couple of places that students prefer to avoid.

One of these places is Scout Coffee, where Witt thinks the coffee tastes off.

Lucy’s Coffee Co is a place whose coffee contradicts the environment. Their avocado toast is amazing but the espresso is bitter.

So, it comes down to two coffee shops.

“In my opinion, it’s definitely between Skippers or Linnaea’s. I love the atmosphere of Linnaea’s. It’s so homey and comforting. But Skipper’s is very convenient and it’s close to school and I prefer something that I can grab and go,” said sophomore Liza Flushman.

Skippers is my top choice because they have a good study environment, the staff is very friendly, and there are countless delicious drink options. I would recommend the horchata latte and the honey lavender matcha.
