For San Luis Obispo High School’s spring musical the drama club brought “Hairspray” to life on stage. “Hairspray” is the largest cast the drama club ever had in a production with over 70 students involved. The cast had been working hard in rehearsals every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for the past two months. There were two different sets of casts for the main characters and for the first time in SLOHS history a teacher was a part of the cast. English teacher Craig Stewart played Edna Turnblad, the main character, Tracy’s mom.
Freshman Haley Howard played a Dynamite, a background singer and dancer. When asked what her favorite musical number to perform was Howard said, “’Welcome to the Sixties’, definitely. It’s a lot of fun, we’re always moving and there are a lot of singing parts.” Howard’s favorite part about being involved with the musical was “the people in it. It’s amazing meeting all these people and I’ve made so many friends. It’s just an amazing experience.”
Sophomore Grace Park saw “Hairspray” on April 18 and gave the show her stamp of approval. “I thought it was really good. It looked like they spent a lot of time on it.” Last year Park saw “Legally Blonde” and stated “I thought it was better than “Legally Blonde” because a lot more people showed up and a lot more people were in to the show.” Her favorite character was “my friend Emma Jane [Haas],” who plays Penny. “I thought she was the most into the play.” Parks’s favorite musical number was “Can’t Stop the Beat” at the end.”
