“The Matrix” was a revolutionary 1999 film that asked audiences to reconsider their own conception of reality, a movie that was insanely popular in its time for its dynamic effects and engaging premise.

However, after the wildly successful first film, Warner Bros. decided to make two more sequels. Those sequels were disappointing for many and after the third film Warner Bros. abandoned the project completely. But now, 18 years later, they are restarting the franchise with The Matrix: Resurrections.

Many have already divided themselves over the film that hasn’t been released yet, arguing that it will be a strongly written film that can revitalize the Matrix universe while others criticize it for being a simple cash grab.

“The Matrix: Resurrections” will be an engaging movie that holds onto the past while carving a path for the future.

At the end of “The Matrix: Revolutions”, there were many open-ended storylines that could be picked up by a sequel. While most audiences will not remember those plotlines from a movie 18 years before, I’m sure that the film will account for that and adjust the story to explain the plotlines and draw the audience into the film.

Not only that, but the director of the movie is Lana Wachowski, one of the original directors of the Matrix. This shows that the director will have great respect for the legacy they are upholding and will put all their attention into ensuring that the film is a success.

“I think that the ‘Matrix’ has the potential to live up to its reputation,” said freshman Paige Losee.

One of the major parts of the Matrix films that made them so successful are the action and effects, which were incredible for the time and amazed audiences in theaters. With effects on the rise and CGI more realistic than ever before, the action can only improve from where it began.

Oftentimes, people will criticize movies in a saga for introducing new characters while keeping old characters. This problem was most prevalent with the Star Wars sequels, where the old characters were ignored and changed drastically to serve as a springboard for new and younger characters.

Fans of the Matrix movies shouldn’t have to fear the same. Neo is still centered to be played by actor Keanu Reeves and Trinity is even reintroduced, played by the same actress as well. While Morpheus is no longer played by Lawrence Fishburne, actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will ensure that the role remains.

It is difficult for a movie to stay consistent with its own history while also justifying its own existence, and fans have reason to be skeptical, but I believe that this movie will succeed regardless.

“The Matrix: Revolutions” has the potential to carry on the story of the original films, while expanding on pre established characters and delivering impressive action and effects. This combination of factors will result in a film that respects the past yet carves a path to the franchise’s future.
