San Luis Obispo High School students were bored during quarantine and had to turn to varied means of entertainment.

Some discovered the world of literature.

From murder mysteries to fantasies to romance novels, there is always a book for everyone.

“I started reading marie over quarantine because I was really bored,” said freshman Riley Moerman.

With seemingly endless recommendations on social media, students found their to-read lists overflowing. All this reading inspiration led many students to find their new favorite book in 2021.

“My favorite book I read this year was ‘Six of Crows’ because I liked the way they would switch P.O.V.s. I also liked how they brought attention to real world problems by disguising it as their world problems” said freshman Liza Flushman.

‘Six of Crows’ was written by Leigh Bardugo and was published in 2015. The book is part of a series that was adapted into a Netflix series called ‘Shadow and Bone.’

“My favorite book I read this year was ‘The Cousins’ by Karen M. McManus because it was a fabulous mix of murder mystery and deception with an old money vibe,” said sophomore Alida Laursen.

Karen M. McManus has also published other extremely successful books in her career. She is most well known for her first book, ‘One of Us Is Lying,’ which spent over 200 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and has been adapted into a television series.

If you didn’t get a chance to pick up a book this year, now you have some recommendations from SLOHS students to add to your 2022 to-read lists.
