This past April, “The Bad Guys” hit theaters across the world for the enjoyment of San Luis Obispo High School students among others.

While this year I feel is a bad year for movies, especially animated ones, “The Bad Guys” is a welcome exception.

Many review sites give acclaim to this movie. Rottontamatoes.com, one of the most commonly known review aggregators, gave it a 88/100. Was that review a bit too generous, maybe, but it still does point to how the movie is good.

What I personally like about the movie the most is its charm. The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, and its jokes are funny because of that. Pair that with a great artstyle and great characters, and you have a pretty good movie.

“The Bad Guys” has substance. It’s not like other recent animated movies that completely lack plot, characters, and emotion. Is it a bit cheesy at times? Yes. But it is a kids movie, and for what it is supposed to accomplish it does it well.

But, it’s not perfect. Its plot is questionable, and like all Dreamworks movies it’s filled with unnecessary fart jokes. Those are just small details, however, in an otherwise very enjoyable movie.

Overall, the movie is very very good, but then again not a breakthrough. This movie is a great watch if you don’t want to sit through something too serious, and instead want a feel good comedy you can smile about after finishing. My personal favorite character is Cuddles.
