San Luis Obispo High School students flooded theaters during 2021 for the many important releases, but which of the many films were the most successful?

“Black Widow,” a 2021 film released by Marvel made nearly $371 million dollars, including international box office. This was the most successful film released during the pandemic until “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” another Marvel release, that garnered $401 million in the international box office.

Every month it seemed like there was another record to be broken, but when “Dune,” a Warner Bros. produced adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel, was released, it garnered $391 million dollars at the box office.

“I think Dune probably made the most money,” said freshman Arely Perez when asked about the film’s box office.

“Eternals,” was heralded as a low point for Marvel Studios last year, however, garnering $300 million in the international and domestic box office. While that is still considered a box office success, the film was noticeably the low point in 2021’s lineup.

“I think it’s weird that Eternals didn’t make that much money considering it was a Marvel movie,” said freshman Tyler Hagobian.

However, as film releases skyrocketed and dwindled, “No Time To Die,” a James Bond film slowly rose through the ranks. The film made $708 million internationally and was the top-grossing film until December when the 12th highest-grossing film of all time was released.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home,” was released on December 17th and within 14 days it made $1.37 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and ending 2021 with a high note.
