By a recent look through my friends and peers in the rest of my grade, people seem to prefer the core class English over math; and I was surprised.

The study of math has stayed popular over the years, but the ancient study of literature seems to be making a comeback.

“[I like math] because I can get a better career out of it. In the real world, you have to write more than you have to use numbers, so it’s just more practical” said sophomore Henry Irwin.

Personally, math is my strongest subject; and I enjoy it a handful more than English. In math, there is one right answer, and so many different ways to get it.

When studying English, it’s all up to your own interpretation. And you can say whatever you want, as long as you can justify it.

“Math challenges your brain more than English. You get to work out the problem on your own and problem solve until you get the answer. And English doesn’t have formulas that you can memorize, you have to be more creative” said sophomore Maya Orgill.

Math at San Luis Obispo High School also assigns less work than English, as there isn’t required homework and no tedious essays that need to be written. And the debate of math vs. English is truly up to everyone’s personal opinion.
