Although it may not seem like it, San Luis Obispo High School is almost done with its first trimester of the year, which means new staff have had time to adjust to the campus. Relocating from the Bay Area, education specialist Jennifer Roberson is a former Tiger now teaching at SLOHS.
To learn more about her experiences so far at SLOHS and how she got here, Expressions contacted Roberson.
Expressions: What is your job at SLOHS, what do you teach?
Education specialist Jennifer Roberson: I am an education specialist here at SLOHS. I co-teach Geometry with Mrs. Fella and I teach a section of Geometry on my own too.
Expressions: Where are you coming from? Have you taught elsewhere previously?
Roberson: I was a student at SLOHS and attended Cuesta and Cal Poly. I moved to the Bay Area in 2010 and decided to move back to SLO in 2021 so my two sons could grow up closer to family. I spent the last four years teaching special education students in first through fourth grade at Del Mar Elementary School in Morro Bay. Before that I taught lots of different subjects at Liberty High School in Brentwood for nine years.
Expressions: Why did you decide to work at SLOHS?
Roberson: I always loved my job at Liberty High School, working with students who are figuring out how to be meaningful citizens in their community is very important to me. The students that I worked with dealt with many out of their control influences on their daily life that made it hard for them to be successful. I wanted my own kids to grow up on the Central Coast so when the opportunity to move back to SLO came up, I took it! But that meant I had to work at an elementary school, which was a great experience, but was not what I wanted to do for my career. Teaching at the high school I used to go to is wild. The campus is way different now, but some of the older buildings that are still so familiar to me survived construction and one of my old teachers is still working here, which is crazy to me.
Expressions: What’s the best part of your job and working at SLOHS?
Roberson: Working with students and helping them succeed so they can take that next step into adulthood is very cool.
Expressions: What are your hobbies outside of school?
Roberson: I have two young boys so there is not a lot of down time for me. My older son (he’s twelve) plays for a travel baseball team so we spend a lot of our time at the ball fields, which I love. My younger son (he’s seven) is into all kinds of activities so he keeps me even busier. I enjoy watching TV and reading if I get a quiet moment to myself. My favorite author is Kristin Hannah.
Expressions is happy to welcome Roberson back to SLOHS, she’s sure to be a great addition!
