As Valentine’s Day is soon approaching, numerous students on the San Luis Obispo High School campus are ready to get out their stretchy sweatpants, and stuff their faces with chocolate, which they undoubtedly bought for themselves. Though this ‘trend’ includes a majority of the SLOHS campus’ students, there are still many couples that are wandering through the quads.
In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. Though this day is marked on many calenders, it is not given an official ‘holiday’ break for schools as other holidays like it recieve.
“On Valentine’s Day I have a swim meet, so I won’t be able to do anything with my girlfriend on that day, but when I get back, I am taking her to dinner,” said freshman Franco-Fitzgerald.
Only 13 percent of teenagers under 15 think Valentine’s Day is “painful,” while 22 percent say it’s “overrated,” and 24 percent think it’s irrelevant.
“My least favorite thing about Valentine’s Day is the high expectations that people have around the whole day,” said senior Grace Nickerson.
Though Valentine’s Day can be a little annoying to some, there is still an arguable purpose for the day.
“My favorite thing is being able to continue to grow out the relationship my boyfriend and I have and really spend one on one time to celebrate our love, and getting to be with my favorite person,” said junior Lily Bryson.
Whether you love the holiday for it’s heart-shaped chocolate, or because you love having another excuse to spend time with your loved ones, Valentine’s Day is a holiday to appreciate.
