Numerous students on the San Luis Obispo High School campus are emotionally ready to graduate, but what is their next step? Various students have already received offers from different schools around the country, specifically for pursuing an athletic pathway. Expressions set out to ask senior Anthony Olvera what his plans are for after graduation.
“I have been offered an athletic and academic scholarship to Bethel University [in Indiana] for football and to study kinesiology, but I have not decided if I am going there or not yet,” said Olvera.
Though students may receive scholarships to certain schools, that doesn’t mean that they are automatically going to continue on their education at that school. This can be for different reasons, depending on the person, but most commonly for the conflict of being too far away from one’s family.
“If I don’t go to Bethel University, then I will be going to Santa Barbara Community College,” said Olvera.
Many athletes at SLOHS have dedicated copious hours to improve their skills and already hold a driven mindset to advance their proficiency.
“I have been playing football for five years [Four years at Liberty High School, and one year at SLOHS] at the varsity level, but I do not plan on pursuing a career in the sport,” said Olvera.
Even though plenty of SLOHS students have received athletic scholarships for college, those scholarships also include the educational aspect of what do do academically for future career prospects, especially if the sport as a profession doesn’t work out.
“I am most excited about leaving the state for school and getting to experience something new, but I am still nervous about being so far away from family,” said Olvera.
