Many students at San Luis Obispo High School listen to various styles of music: rap, pop, R&B, classical, and many more. However, there is a huge discussion on whether country music is a good genre of music or not. Country music often involves lyrics filled with family, love, and other life lessons people usually learn along the course of their life.
Country music has good lyrics that usually involve a deep message, unlike rap or pop music. It is also more appropriate for children and can develop a love for the different instruments, such as banjos, electric and acoustic guitars, and harmonicas used to create the music. It also has a better beat and rhythm to dance to. Line dancing is usually associated with country music, which can create a better connection to the music and one’s community.
“I like country music because I grew up listening to it with my dad, and it made us closer. I just never lost touch with it and it’s mostly upbeat and fun,” said freshman Hannah Stephens.
Some people may say that country music is boring or isn’t as fun as other genres of music. Maybe it also has repetitive lyrics and most of the songs are about the same thing. However, each country artist has something unique to say about their experiences in life, and although the artists may lead similar lives the messages are all particular to that one person.
“It’s all musically and lyrically repetitive so it gets annoying after about two songs. It doesn’t help that the rest of my family thinks it’s annoying as well,” said freshman Bridget Tuohy.
Overall, country music is a genre of music that students at SLOHS should listen to more. It can bring people together, create a fun environment for children, and teach students about life all at the same time.
