As 2018 comes to an end San Luis Obispo High School students are well aware of the extensive variety of new music that came out this year. The most influential and surprising album of this year was Grapetooth’s self-titled debut album “Grapetooth”. This Chicago-based band consists of members Clay Frankel and Chris Bailoni who are also of the Chicago indie-rock band, Twin Peaks.
The name Grapetooth refers to Frankel’s copious consumption, inspiring their first song on the album, “Red Wine”. Before the whole album was released this year, two of their singles “Violent” and “Trouble” were released gaining them popularity. These singles, as well as many songs on the album, carry a 1980s new wave vibe on top of Cure-like guitar riffs, creating a bouncy grunge sound.
“To me, they sound like New Order with some dark 80s punk lyrics which is really cool, and definitely different from what most alternative bands are doing right now,” said senior Riley Miklik.
As of right now Grapetooth has only played shows in their hometown of Chicago, but have come out with new music videos and merchandise as well. Their album is available to listen on Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, and CD’s are available on the Grapetooth website. Music like theirs has proven to be relevant this year in a super fun, creative way, and hopefully, through 2019 we can plan on hearing more.
