The San Luis Obispo Boys JV water polo team is nearly undefeated this year with an incredible record of 12-1, the one loss being to a team way up in redwood that was lost due to poor performance by the team, but all teams in the SLO county are yet to defeat the team! The team has been so outstanding that they were placed in a varsity tournament and nearly won multiple games!
“I was moderately surprised by the decision of the Junior Varsity team being pulled up to varsity, we had dominated every game we played [so far],” said freshman Ezra Lopez.
The team has had a great season so far, and all teams in the area have yet to give the team a run for their money, but the team still holds the grudge against Redwood, the one team to have defeated them, and are ready for a rematch.
Sadly they lost the four games they had over the two day tournament, but every single game was close, and the team was even winning at some point for most of the games.
“I really enjoyed watching the sport, and from what I can tell the team has done well this year,” said freshman Greyson Welsh.
The team is a JV team; they will not be heading to any CIF finals, but only have a league final with all the other local teams like Arroyo Grande and Paso. The team is expected to win, but Water Polo is very unpredictable, and star players can be sick or injured.
“Well, I think, a hundred percent, we could’ve done better. I’m not gonna sit here and complain about the referees or the fact that one of our best players got a concussion in the first game. It was definitely a mental thing playing against guys bigger than us and also just the sheer amount of mass they had on us. But, I know that we learned from those games and will be able to do well for the rest of the season and maybe we’ll play them again next year. I’ll be excited to see how we rank up,” said sophomore Noah Jones on how the team played with varsity level teams.
All this winning can also be bad for a team, leading to a feeling of dominance that can cause many bad things to happen, like laziness, missing practice, and not trying as hard as you can, which can lead to bad things in the future, as the teams skills decline over time.
Overall the team has had an amazing season with (hopefully) even more epic games and championships to come as the team improves over the summer in club polo, hopefully leading to an even better season next year.
