History was made on the San Luis Obispo High School football field two weeks ago when the Tigers took on the Morro Bay Pirates at home. Senior running back Colbin Garrison broke the twenty-year-standing rushing record in an impressive performance against the Pirates. His performance hasn’t just given him a spot in the SLOHS record book, but has inspired his teammates and ones around him with his hard work and consistency.
Garrison’s record-breaking moment came after multiple years of dedication to his sport and countless hours of training. Being on the varsity football team since his freshman year, he knew it was bound to happen. So far this season, he’s already rushed for 890 yards, showing his leadership role as one of the team’s top playmakers.
“I always thought that at some point during this season it was destined for me to break it,” said Garrison.
Being one of the big goals he set for himself in his high school career, Garrison hopes that it will help him stay focused for the upcoming playoffs.
“Now that it’s out of the way, I’ll be able to lock in even more for CIF,” said Garrison.
The offensive linemen, who open up lanes and block for him, spoke highly of his leadership and attitude on and off the field.
“Colbin is very supportive, and if we mess up or something, he’ll just pick you back up and tell you to get it on the next play. It makes me want to try harder for him,” said junior lineman Chuck Jacobs.
Colbin also credits having a strong defense to breaking the record.
“Our goal is to get the ball back in the hands of the offense as fast and efficiently as we can. It motivates the defense to work harder knowing that Colbin can convert on most of the drives,” said defensive coordinator coach Kobi Ikenoyama.
Breaking a twenty-year record might seem like a big deal, but Garrison is quick to credit his teammates for helping him get there. For him, the record represents a personal milestone and, most importantly, the strength of the Tiger nation.
