With over fifteen different sports available at San Luis Obispo High School, almost every athlete at SLOHS can be a part of a school team. For some though, the sports available aren’t enough. Clubs and travel teams seem to be taking the interest of many, so what do the students really want?
In the San Luis Coastal Unified School District and affiliated CIF leagues, roughly every school has the same batch of sports. With the only standout one being flag football only being in some schools.
“I think that more field sport options like Rugby and Lacrosse would put great use on our somewhat new field. They’re sports that are capable of being a fun experience to watch so as a person who enjoys Friday night lights, it would be a great change,” said junior Kieran Mallon.
Many students on campus also participate in sports not included, with some more unique than others.
“I do boxing outside of school, it’s pretty fun. But would I want competitive boxing at our school? Depending on how safe the school could make it, I think it could be fun and interesting,” said junior Kameron Santos.
Programs outside of school like 805 Lacrosse run organized lacrosse just like any other club sport. Along with students heavily interested in surfing, mountain biking, even competitive cheerleading in other sports. The list of sports can go on for hours.
“I think a more niche sport like pickleball would be interesting. Having more sports than the ones we have now seems a little unnecessary though,” said junior Cole Bramer.
SLOHS offers the best of the best, with little to no complaint about what is or isn’t available. But some people’s passion extends past campus.
