San Luis Obispo High School’s newspaper advisor Scott Nairne is taking over TNN this year after the departure of former media teacher Jason Heimerdinger. With Nairne’s input, how will the quality of TNN and its engagement be affected this year?
“I’m a fan of lifelong learning so I am taking on a class that sixty percent of it I don’t know anything about, and I’m learning with the kids,” said Nairne.
TNN is about working with all the people in the class together in order to produce daily announcements for the school. Some people work on producing the show with lighting and sound, some people get info to put in the show, and others act as anchors.
“I am definitely enjoying this class so far! I really enjoy being able to try out different parts of TNN. I like to be an anchor and talk on TNN. I am looking forward to just learning as much as I can about TNN and the filming process…such as operating cameras, visuals, etc,” said freshman Jove Ashley.
Nairne has been advising the school newspaper for twelve years, helping students publish and print countless articles both in print and on the website. With this production experience he’ll surely be a great addition for TNN.
“I think Nairne’s experience will hopefully lead to more long form and in-depth stories from TNN. I really like their longer pieces, especially stuff that isn’t easily translatable to newspaper. I also think that it will help newspaper not cover the same exact topics as TNN and vice versa, hopefully increasing quality and efficiency for both,” said newspaper editor and senior Aidan Field.
Nairne is already hard at work trying to improve TNN in many different ways, using his prior experience to help.
“I’m looking forward to learning to use Premier Pro which is the video program we use, [and the lighting equipment], but more importantly, it’s a whole ‘nother group of kids that I don’t get to hang out with, that I now get to, and they’re super unique and fun,” said Nairne.
It’s really too soon to see the changes in TNN’s production, but based on how Nairne teaches newspaper production, SLOHS is sure to have a great year with TNN.
