San Luis Obispo Track and Field had the finale to their season last week, ending with a second-place finish for the boys varsity and a first-place finish for the girls varsity.
“It was a crazy meet to be at. The competition was insane,” said sophomore Jackson Sullivan.
On the boys’ side, the Tigers put up a good fight, finishing in the top five in 13 out of the 17 events in the finals. A new SLOHS school record was made for the 4x800m team. In a devastating 4x100m, the Tiger boys were unable to make the handoff and were disqualified from the meet, however, they will get to redeem themselves at Clovis East High School for the CIF-CS Division 1 championship.
“We outperformed our predictions in several events, but in the end we fell short,” said junior Colbin Garrison.
On the girls’ side, the Tigers made a fantastic show, winning the meet and beating second place by almost 100 points. They finished in the top five for every event except the 800m and shot put. The girls’ 4x100m team also broke a 16-year-old school record.
“They did so good. It wasn’t even close,” said senior Myles Payne.
In both the preliminary and final meets, a total of nine events had athletes entered into the top 10 list. It was truly an extraordinary league for the Tigers, and these athletes still have more to come in the postseason. The CIF-CS Division 1 championship, followed by the CIF-CS Masters Championships, and finally the 105th CIF State TF Champs Prelims and Finals.
While many Tigers won’t make it that far, it’s important to note that there are four CCAF all-comers meets in the summer that any athlete can attend. With so many school records being broken, athletes should remember that the sport of Track and Field is one of self-improvement, and breaking personal records is what should be most sought after. Run fast, go SLO!
