San Luis Obispo High School girls basketball kicked off their season two weeks ago with a game against Morro Bay, taking the win and setting them up for a year of success. The team currently holds a 3-0 record in the preseason and is gearing up for their first tournament today through Saturday at SLOHS in the newly renovated big gym.
¨We ́ve got a really young team this year, but we are looking pretty good. There is still a lot we need to do before we are ready for league, but we are making strides. The tournament this week will really allow us to challenge ourselves as a team and individually, ̈ said varsity junior basketball player Allison Dierks.
Some girls have played year round to keep their skills sharp for the season, but the team has only had about a month of official practices. Even with head coach Dan Monroe becoming a father only three days ago with the birth of his son, he has been diligent and focused on getting his team into shape for this week.
The girls will face off against Camarillo, Cupertino, Arvin, and Clovis East within the next four days. The team will not have an easy win this week, especially when taking on Camarillo, a team currently ranked third in the state.
¨We’re ‘putting on our big girl pants’ like Monroe told us to, ̈ said Dierks.
SLOHS girls basketball will have to fight for every basket this week in order to keep up their successful record. Come out and support the team and wish them luck as they begin to prepare for league games in January.
