Halloween may be over but pumpkin season at San Luis Obispo High School is far from over! Pumpkins are possibly the most well known emblem of autumn. They are used for decoration and pumpkin puree is commonly used in Thanksgiving tradition of pumpkin pie.
One of our own SLOHS students, senior Ty Evans, is an avid pumpkin grower himself. Expressions interviewed him about what it is like growing large pumpkins.
Expressions: What first interested you in growing big pumpkins?
Senior Tyler Evans: Well, my dad grew a pumpkin with me when I was really little and we won a competition that year so I just decided to keep going.
Expressions: Where do you grow your pumpkins?
Evans: I live on a farm in Morro Bay. We grow avocados and other kinds of crops besides pumpkins.
Expressions: Do you enter your pumpkins into contests?
Evans: I won the Giant Pumpkin Contest before, it was exciting.
Expressions: What is the most fun part about growing pumpkins?
Evans: Rolling them down the hill at the end of the year, I love it.
Before fall is over, make sure to check out one of our many local pumpkin patches to get a pumpkin and perhaps make a pumpkin for Thanksgiving. It might just pumpkin-spice up your life!
