Who is the new Goth girl? Seems to be a lot more of them around. Photo Courtesy of sophomore Faye Niven.
The goth style is coming back to San Luis Obispo High School, even if it’s a little different than before. Where there used to be spikes and ripped long dresses, we now have short skirts, over-knee socks, and corsets, but ripped pants, shirts, and dark makeup are still the same. Other things goth is known for are lace, velvet gloves, and fishnets.
“I think that it’s interesting to see people express themselves through fashion, it’s very adventurous,” said junior Erika Spargo.
The goth style came from the United Kingdom in the 1980s from fans of gothic rock and was promoted by the comics the Addams Family and Vampira.
“I don’t think I would wear goth-style clothes, even though it looks super cool on other people but I don’t think it fits my vibe. On other people it looks super cool, and it makes me want to be their friend, but it also kind of scares me too.” said senior Vanessa Alamilla.
While some students wear goth-style clothes, others are more into the emo style. The difference is confusing for some, but others can explain it effortlessly.
“In my opinion, it usually requires more commitment and effort to wear and classify as proper goth since the elements of it are a lot more unconventional compared to other similar styles. If emo is skinny jeans, Goth is corsets. If punk is studded jackets, goth is piercings and flowy long gowns. If the scene is neon rattails, goth is micro bangs and straight black hair.” said senior Malibu Uzunlar.
If you like it or not, the goth style is definitely coming back, and we are glad to see people being able to express themselves through their clothing styles.
