Platform shoes have been hitting the hallways hard at San Luis Obispo Highschool and breaking the ankles of the students who choose to wear them.
These shoes don’t only add one to two inches of additional height but as well double the chance of a nasty fall in the math building or a twisted ankle on the iconic red stairs. Nonetheless, our proud tigers bear the uneven terrain of our campus in the name of style.
But is anything really just for style?
Or is it to give a confidence boost and a sense of self-assurance to those who may be a tad shorter than the rest.
Now, coming from a tall girl’s perspective, around 5’9 to be exact, the idea that someone can add height, a generous amount as well, feels almost unfair for those who are tall and can not just simply take-off height. It might just have to be the compromise we tall people have to make, as we are privileged in being able to reach to the back of the highest cabinets. But, overall, height should not dictate or act as guidelines when picking out shoes. Shoes have the ability to make or break an outfit and someone’s confidence, so letting all shoes, especially platforms, be for all is the only reasonable answer.
“I don’t like all platforms but some of them are super cute and give me a little bit more confidence,” said senior Casie Monroy who stands at five feet exactly. Confidence is key and platform shoes offer much-needed confidence as well as stylistic preference. Not only do all platform shoes range in height boost, the Guinness world record being twenty inches, but many brands offer a version of platform shoes. Such as Doc Marten, Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Vans to name a few.
Platform shoes may risk ankle support but make up for it in self-esteem support. SLOHS is full of diversity in people and now shoes, the hope for the 2022 school year would be a push for more boys rocking the platform because we know and you know the one extra inch won’t hurt.
“I love platform shoes,” said principal Leslie O’Connor. That should be enough evidence in itself to make you rethink your classic old shoes and buy a pair of killer ankle twister height boosting shoes.
